The struggle is real | Migration Tales

When we decided it was time to leave home, and that migration was the way to go, we jumped into it fully. There was nothing to question – we wanted something else and that meant moving countries. Both of us proud South Africans that have felt the need to let go of home and move to a new place, make a new life. Start something else!

So we thought for a while and we looked at our needs and we weighed up the odds – and we made a decision! Migration was the way to go!

And we were so thrilled at the changes to come!

But then came the planning and the sorting and the crazy! We made a list that was longer than we thought it would be and methodically we started ticking things off the list. Before we knew it, we had done everything that we could do until that point!

While sitting around waiting for an official offer from the University, an offer we need to start processing our visa’s we realised that we’d miss this place even more than we thought we would.

Every car ride started to sound the same… “look at this,” “I’ll miss this,”  “isn’t this beautiful,” “oh I love this place…” and so it goes!

And we will, truly and honestly miss this place! This is home!

But as the saying goes, “home is where the heart is” and I think that’s the truth. I’ve made this my home after 18 years of calling another place home… a country I never even visit anymore because the memories of home are too painful.

So I came to know this place – as home! And I will do it again!

Because home is where your heart is but I carry my heart with me where ever I go!

Although I will truly miss South Africa, this country that has been my home since 2003, I will learn to love again. A new home. A new place to rest my head!

Home is where the heart is…

I will truly miss this home, and the people who I’m leaving behind, so many people I wish I could take with me, but I will carry them in my heart!

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

  1. Lovely post. I live in different provinces from all my family and close buddies. I feel like this – home is where the heart is. To travel is good and to live in another place is good. You guys will do great. Wherever you go you take a piece of the other “homes” with you. I still feel home at my mom’s place and other family members…

    1. Thanks so much Melissa! I think it’s hard at first but once you find your place, it doesn’t really matter where you are! Mom’s house will always be home that’s for sure!
