Cause when you worry, your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry, be happy
Don’t worry, be happy now.
Bobby McFerrin
This is a list, not of the best or greatest songs of all time. This list isn’t the kind of list you’d expect someone to have either. It’s a huge mishmash of everything. It ranges from rock to country and swishes right into R&B. So what do these songs all have in common you might ask? Me. That’s it. I’ve always loved all different kinds of music and I’ve always been able to appreciate different sounds.
My first album ever was a Mariah Carey Christmas album and although I can’t stand her now (talented as she may be).. that CD got me through some pretty good moments. Yup, music has that power. It can lift you out of a slump and it can make you fall in love.
“Where words fail, music speaks.”
― Hans Christian Andersen
One thing I know for sure, there is music for every occasion. Here are ten of the songs that have impacted my life at some point. Some of them for being happy, some of them got me through some crazy situations, played over and over on repeat. Some of them empowered me, other broke my heart every time and one of these songs I danced my first dance as a Mrs to.
Every one of these songs makes me remember, even on the days I just want to forget… because there is nothing quite like the power of a song.
Always – Bon Jovi
Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N Roses
Three Little Birds – Bob Marley
Ms Jackson – Outkast
No Scrubs – TLC
Unwell – Matchbox 20
Man Eater – Nelly Furtado
Jolene – Dolly Parton
Last Kiss – Pearl Jam
Don’t Worry Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin
Better Together – Jack Johnson

Better Together – Jack Johnson
[Verse 1]
There is no combination of words I could put on the back of a postcard
No song that I could sing, but I can try for your heart
Our dreams, and they are made out of real things
Like a, shoe-box of photographs
With sepia-toned loving
Love is the answer
At least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? And where do we go?
And how come it’s so hard?
It’s not always easy and
Sometimes life can be deceiving
I’ll tell you one thing
It’s always better when we’re together
[Chorus]
Mmm, it’s always better when we’re together
Yeah, we’ll look at the stars when we’re together
Well, it’s always better when we’re together
Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together
[Verse 2]
And all of these moments
Just might find their way into my dreams tonight
But I know that they’ll be gone
When the morning light sings
And brings new things
For tomorrow night you see
That they’ll be gone too
Too many things I have to do
But if all of these dreams might find their way
Into my day to day scene
I’d be under the impression
I was somewhere in between
With only two
Just me and you
Not so many things we got to do
Or places we got to be
We’ll sit beneath the mango tree now
[Chorus]
[Outro]
I believe in memories
They look so, so pretty when I sleep
Hey now, and when I wake up
You look so pretty sleeping next to me
But there is not enough time
And there is no, no song I could sing
And there is no combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing
We’re better together

Sometimes I think you write solely for me Joni!!! Of course your list made me CRACK OUT!!! The sound of my own laughter echoed in my very empty living room!!! Im sorry, I have to ask….why in the name of MARS is Jolene on this list???? You knew this was coming!!! I know I listen to it just once a year….either in the form of a youtube link or the words have been known to be typed onto my wall before by someone who included this song on their “lifetime” list! But I always thought it was a standing joke….now I know there is something behind it and it has nothing to do with me……thank goodness. My whole life I heard my mother say, “how I hate this song!!!” Hahahahahahaha…..
On a side note: Did you know your gran named me? She gave my mom the idea of combining John and Herlene. True story! She always reminds me!
TyrannyofPink says
Wow!! That is AMAZING!! Seriously…. (the part about my gran naming you) and honestly you could have been called Herjo or some random other combination so I’m pretty grateful she gave you a song that allowed me for all eternity to be singing it to you.
Truthfully, I just grew up with Dolly Parton (a result of living with your grandparents) and I love her. Love her to death. That is my favourite song and I LOVE that eery year, in some shape or form I can sing it to you…. <3 There's no other meaning... it's just our song and I love her.
See, i bet you didn't even realise we HAD a song heheh
xx
Jolene says
Hahahahahaha….Ah Joni, you truly make my heart smile…if not laugh out loud!!! We have a song!!!! (Little jump…..clicking my heels) And yes, seriously….the name comes from aunty Hilda! Although i think I was born before the song….so it was totally original on her part!!! And pretty damn genius! Thank goodness she didn’t go with Herjo! Can you imagine!
But I now get why it made it onto your list!!! And I am more grateful for the annual performance in whatever form or shape it arrives! Its a sure winner every year!!! <3
