I got married in December 2012 to the absolute love of my life and best person in the world (want some toast with that cheese?) and we immediately got on a plane and flew off into the sunset. We are both fans of exploring and staying in less known places where locals are more likely to go than tourists but for our honeymoon, we agreed, the criteria was simple. We wanted an all-inclusive, full service, don’t have to carry your wallet around anywhere kind of place and it was the best decision ever. It was my first time staying in an all-inclusive hotel and was quite new and exciting for me.
We literally had walked into our travel agents office, told her what we want and walked out with a trip to Mauritius booked for the day after our wedding. This was maybe a little bit of a mistake considering how little time there was between getting home, finishing off the last of packing and heading to the airport at 4 am. The flight itself was a little over 5 hours but it went by really quickly.
When we arrived at the airport there was a little bit of confusion as our agent had forgotten to give us our vouchers for the transit and the hotel but not to worry, the hotel was very accommodating and they sorted everything out for us immediately. I would highly recommend Le Mauricia Hotel. The hotel is clean, beautiful, right on the bay and the people who work there are lovely. Check out their website, the pictures are an accurate reflection of the real deal.
When we got to our hotel from the airport we were welcomed in and offered a welcome drink as our room wasn’t quite ready for us, so we sat at the pool while we sipped our first honeymoon cocktails. Yum! Nothing beats a cocktail than one made with Mauritian rum! When our room was eventually ready for us, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that we had been bumped up to a fancier and very big room. Unfortunately, that meant being away from the beach.
They were very confused when we declined their generous offer in favour of our original sea facing but much smaller room. We finally arrived in our room to find fancy “towel art” and flowers on the bed along with a complimentary bottle of champagne… double yay!! Also on our bed, was a wedding present from our dear friends Monique and Steven who couldn’t be at our wedding but had arranged a couples massage as a surprise wedding gift for us – which was INCREDIBLE and a lovely and welcome surprise addition to our honeymoon in Mauritius. We were discussing honeymoons with some of our other friends who said they had a fantastic stay in one of Exeptional Villas’ properties. Visit this page for more information.
We spent the entire ten days of our honeymoon in Mauritius lying around at the pool, eating (all-inclusive meals), swimming in the ocean and drinking rum or cocktails at the hotel bar. Part of the deal with our hotel was that we could spend as much time at the other beachcomber hotels around the bay and try out their restaurants and bar areas but our hotel was the best anyway as it was less family oriented and better for honeymooners. The sunsets were honestly incredible and perfect for lazing around in the early evening sipping on a sundowner just before dinner. I can’t speak much about the rest of the country, it’s a pity but with the exception of one afternoon spent walking around we stayed holed-up for the entire time just enjoying our newly married status and taking advantage of the extreme relaxing that we so desperately needed after all the stress that is having a fairly large wedding.
I would highly recommend this as a honeymoon destination. I’ve heard there is a lot to see on the island if you’re up for a bit of adventure too. Also, if golfing is your thing, the island is home to great golf resorts and spas; for more information, visit this link – https://eaglegolftours.com/mauritius-golf-holidays
Just remember these words; try the vanilla rum!
