1. Book your accommodation in advance so that you can plan your route safely and you have a planned destination to arrive at. You don’t want to drive around in the dark in areas that you are not familiar with and it’s safer to know exactly where you are headed.
2. Make sure you don’t leave any visible goods in your car if you have to park it in the street. This applies during the day and at night. Many insurance brokers won’t cover losses that occur due to you leaving items where they can be seen easily.
3. Get your car serviced before your trip and check your tyres. You don’t want to risk breaking down in an isolated and hard to reach area where it’s hard to get help. Along the same lines, make sure that your car has enough petrol or diesel to last you the distance between isolated towns.
4. Limit the amount of cash that you carry on you and where you can, rather try to make use of your debit cards. You should also never draw money from ATMs at night and especially not in dark areas. Be vigilant every time you do draw money from an ATM. Always be aware of your surroundings.
5. When driving in more remote or rural areas, be vigilant about animals in the road. Nothing ends a road trip faster than crashing your car into a cow. Not good for you or the poor cow. Trust me, this is a real issue in South Africa. The beautiful country landscape often comes hand in hand with cows and goats and even dogs roaming free. Just always be careful.
6. Take an old school map along with you in the car. Many areas of South Africa have poor signal and you might find yourself completely lost and without signal on your phone. It’s always safer to have planned your route in advance or to have a good old-fashioned map to help you if you find yourself completely off the beaten track.

South Africa is an amazing country with so much to see and so much to do and the last thing you need is for things to go wrong while you’re out exploring.
