Flying with children is tough! Seriously, it’s no joke. I went on my first flight as a mom with Oden when he was four months old. It wasn’t a very long flight, we flew to the Eastern Cape and he literally slept through the entire ordeal but gees was it stressful. We had the car seat, the pram, our hand luggage and he was so tiny I had him in my arms the entire time. It takes a lot of planning traveling with kids but don’t let that put you off your next trip.
So we know that travelling with small children is hard work but there are definitely ways to make it a bit easier for you! If you want to know my tricks, get a good nights rest before and hope for the best!
Seriously though, the older they get the harder it gets because they do more than just sleep through the trip but my advice is to take along a lot of items to distract them. If they have favourite toys take those and if they like playing games on your phone, now’s the time to give them free rein with that.
What helped us on our last trip was telling Oden that everyone had to stay belted in. It stopped him from wanting to run up and down the aisles and climb over everything. Luckily for us we are big on him being in his car seat so he understands rules like staying belted in.

So although it CAN be stressful, you shouldn’t let that stop you from enjoying your lives as a family together and that includes getting on that plane! It just takes a little bit of extra planning and the destination makes it all worth it!
Have you taken a trip recently with your kids? Have any tips to add?
