This weekend was a tough one for me. It was the first time I’ve chosen to leave my baby in the care of someone else for a reason other than being in hospital. A few weeks ago we came across a great discounted offer for a Bed & Breakfast in a little town about 45 minutes from where we live. We decided that we needed a break from our real lives, from our drama and the last 3 months. So we booked ourselves in.
I have been so excited about this little adventure for weeks. That was at least until Friday actually arrived. Suddenly, my big girl panties were no where in sight and I was as terrified as Little Red Riding Hood on discovering that grandma was actually the wolf in disguise.
It took A LOT of convincing from an incredible patient husband and a frantic phone call to my cousin to assure me that my child would be absolutely fine without me for the weekend. With much hesitation and a bucketful of tears, we dropped him off with his grandparents late on Friday afternoon and headed off into the sunset.
Our little weekend adventure
Okay, we may have had a rocky start to the weekend and the weather may have totally crapped out on us (it rained non stop) but we still managed to have the absolute best time. On Friday night, we went for sushi to what may have been the tiniest cutest place I’ve been to and had the most delicious platters.
After a lazy lie in on Saturday morning, we headed off to explore the local farm stalls and shops where I ended up buying my baba some really cute clothing. Then we headed off to the local pub and had pizza on the verandah while the rain came and went intermittently making everything smell fresh and new. With our newly filled bellies we went back to our lodge for a nice long nap!
We awoke fresh from our nap and headed off to the local restaurant. Little did we know that their menu consisted mainly of pizza. Not being a big pizza fan, I ordered the only non pizza item on the menu – good old-fashioned fish and chips. The food was incredible. Honestly SO good. It’s a pity the service wasn’t. I ordered a glass of water which I gave up asking for, a mojito that I had to order twice, we hardly saw our waiter and she couldn’t find the cocktail menu when I asked for one. I basically had to guess what cocktail to order based on what I saw around me.
Anyway the ambience was lovely and the food really good so we didn’t let her poor service get us down. After a leisurely dinner we went back to our lodge and poured ourselves a glass of wine which we enjoyed out under the stars. Okay so it was under a roof while it rained but hey let’s just go with “stars”. The weather didn’t ruin anything.
Eventually we went back to our room and I made my poor husband watch every video clip of my baby that I’ve recorded in the last 3 months. I think it’s safe to say I really started missing him on Saturday night.
Early Sunday morning and I’m ready to go now
Sunday morning arrived and I had had enough. We rushed down to breakfast, paid up and hit the road. A mother can only be away from her baby for so long before it starts getting unmanageable. In spite of reassuring phone calls to my mother-in-law I was certain my baby was by now screaming his head off and couldn’t live without me for a second longer.
We arrived at my in-laws house where I ran up the stairs only to find my child oogling and googling over his delightfully colourful and exciting vibrating giraffe toy that his grandmother had bought for him. Not a tear in sight and he certainly didn’t look like he missed me even one bit.
Well, next time I might stop for lunch on the way home 😉

Thanks! What a difference it has made to my mind. Just two nights of proper sleep and not to mention quality time with my husband. Glad I did it… even if it was terrifying.

You’re so brave. I haven’t spent much time away from K. So school will be tough for both of us. I like this idea, perhaps I should start saving and plannign to do so for J’s birthday in May.

After everything that happened we must really needed it but I highly recommend it anyway. We got a great deal on Groupon and was well worth the money spent. J’s birthday is an excellent excuse.
